The National Drugs Campaign have put together a collection of fact sheets and online resources to support parents of 13–17 year olds in their efforts to talk about drug use with their children.
These resources are based on the latest research and feedback from parents and young people and parents as to what does and doesn’t work when talking about drugs.
Worried your drug knowledge isn’t quite up to scratch? – don’t panic. Not surprisingly it’s the willingness of a parent to spend time and talk more so than the information about drugs that makes an impact.
According to the National Drugs Campaign, ‘One of the most effective deterrents to drug use among young people is a parent who wants to spend time with them – someone who talks with them about their friends, what goes on at school, the sport they play and what interests them.’
‘The more parents and other family members get involved in children’s lives, the more positive young people will feel about themselves and the more likely they will be to respond favourably to their family’s views.’
