Methamphetamine/ Ice

What is Methamphetamine (Ice)?

Methamphetamine is a stimulant drug that speeds up the messages between the brain and the body. Methamphetamines can decrease a young person’s need for sleep. Some young people may experience a period of tiredness after using methamphetamines. They may sleep for an extended period of time which is known as a “crash”.

There are a number of factors that impact how a young person might experience a drug. Such as their location, gender, size, mood and if other drugs, alcohol or medication has been taken.

UNDERSTANDING:

Understanding more about why a young person might use methamphetamines can help guide future conversations with them. Young people might use methamphetamines to feel confident, increase their motivation/focus/energy levels or to make them feel happier.
While a young person may use it for many reasons, sometimes drugs can have unintended side effects.

Here are some ways to support a young person who has used too much Ice.

  • Stay calm and reassure them that you are there to support them
  • Support them to move to a safe place where they are comfortable
  • Try to create a calm and safe environment away from overly stimulating things such as bright lights and loud music
  • Offer sips of water if they are hot
  • Reassure them and encourage them to rest if possible
