Some young people who experience problems with their drug use are better able to manage them as they grow and mature and as they learn general life skills such as problem solving and managing impulses and coping strategies.
It doesn’t mean that a young person will always “grow out of”problems. Sometimes problematic substance use prevents young people from developing important skills and coping strategies. By using drugs to help them manage in the short term this substance use can cause more problems and a cycle develops.
Whether or not a young person needs a specialist service to help them, young people experiencing drug-related problems need support and encouragement. They need supportive relationships, safe and stable environments, the chance to participate in meaningful activity and opportunities to develop skills, knowledge and self-belief to have control over their own lives.
If you’re worried about the impact drug taking might have on a young person’s future, have a look at our video. We also recommend this article about the roles of family in helping young people overcome problems.
When does a young person require additional support?
A young person might require support if they are experiencing frequent negative impacts related to their health and wellbeing, they have less control over their substance use than they desire and it gets in the way of important activities like school work or family life. Some indicators that your young person may be experiencing problems related to their substance use are:
Changes in appetite or significant weight loss/gain.
Sudden or frequent changes in mood.
Fluctuating energy levels. Hyperactivity/agitation or lethargy and low mood.
Signs of intoxication-slurred speech, unstable on their feet.
Changes in school performance.
Not turning up to school.
Changes in friendships, seeing less of friends they used to.
Financial problems or a need for money.
Loss of interest in hobbies.
It is important to be aware that mental health concerns, relationship difficulties or even the normal ups and downs of adolescence may account for some of these. It is important to have open and supportive conversations with your young person about all areas of their life and not just focus on their substance use. This is the best way to find out what is going on for your loved one.
Understanding these signs will help build your awareness and pay attention to a young person’s welfare but they won’t diagnose a problem.
It can be confronting to learn that someone you care about is using drugs. Take a look at our video that provides info on the best way to support them during this time.
It doesn’t mean though that a young person will always “grow out of” problems.
