Universal Harm Reduction Strategies

These are just a few ways you can suggest for your young person to stay safe, no matter what they are using.
  • Make a plan prior to using, plan to only use a certain amount, make a “just in case” plan, and plan how to get home.
  • Let someone know if they’re not feeling well after using.
  • Have a person to call if you’re feeling worried, paranoid or start to panic.
  • Call an ambulance if you’re worried at any point about yourself or a friend – an ambulance will usually not call the police.
  • Get drugs checked at a drug checking service (Victorian Pill Testing Service)
  • Try a small amount first, wait to see how the drug affects you before taking more.
  • Never use alone.
  • Take regular breaks from use to avoid dependency.
  • Carry Naloxone, just in case.
  • Stay hydrated when using.
  • Think about the dangers of drinking and using drugs, and driving or getting in a car with someone who has been drinking or taking drugs.
  • Be in a safe and comfortable space.
