Get advice and support from those who have been there and done it
WHAT IS PEER SUPPORT?
Peer support is where people who have experienced AOD problems offer support, encouragement and guidance to others who have, or have had, difficulties with drug or alcohol use.
Alcoholics anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are the best known formal peer support programs but there are many other examples of peer support.
WHAT HAPPENS?
Peer support can provide:
- Support and advice
- Sense of community
- Sharing of experiences
- Peer education on harm reduction
WHAT COULD I EXPECT?
Peer support is often delivered through regular meetings and networks of support. People share stories and experiences but it is not required that everyone in attendance do so.
WHO IS IT BEST FOR?
Peer support is best suited to young people who:
- Have high or severe AOD use
- Are hard to reach
- Are mistrustful of professionals
