More services reporting "synthetic" drug use
Synthetic drugs have been widely discussed lately. Although it is common for young people accessing AOD support to try numerous drugs, some youth services are reporting an increase in young people presenting with synthetic drugs as their primary drug of concern.
The recent Youth AOD Census confirmed that cannabis, alcohol, ice/amphetamines, prescription medication and heroin are the drugs most commonly of concern to young people accessing support services. In recent weeks, a small number of youth AOD services have reported an increase in young people attending who consider synthetic cannabis or "Kronic" their primary substance. Workers in these services have needed to ensure they could provide accurate harm reduction advice and in some cases, withdrawal advice. In addition, workers have also described learning a lot from the young people themselves.
