What are inhalants?
Inhalants are substances inhaled through the nose or mouth that depress or slow down the messages between the brain and the body. These can include aerosols, glues, nitrous oxide (nangs), gas or petrol.
A rare condition, Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome (SDSS) has occurred after the use of inhalants. The risk of this is increased when a young person engages in physical activity after using inhalants.
There are a number of factors that impact how a young person might experience a drug. Such as their location, gender, size, mood and if other drugs, alcohol or medication has been taken.
UNDERSTANDING:
Understanding more about why a young person might use inhalants can help guide future conversations with them. Young people might use inhalants as they like the way it makes them feel (excited/lightheaded/confident), that they are more affordable or more accessible than other drugs or to escape distressing thoughts or feelings.
If a young person overdoses on inhalants they may experience hallucinations, experience pain in the chest or vomit. If you are worried about a young person presenting this way it is best to get medical assistance, call 000 or go to hospital.
- Stay calm and approach the young person quietly
- Open a window or support them to move to a safe and quiet place where they are comfortable and there are no fumes
- Try to keep them seated to reduce the potential of injury.
- Reassure them that you are there to support them
- Remind them that the effects will wear off
