Synthetic cannabis

What is synthetic cannabis?

Synthetic cannabis is a new psychoactive substance (NPS) that was created to mimic the effects of cannabis. It is suggested that there are more negative effects of synthetic cannabis than positive.

The effects of synthetic cannabis can range from anxiety to excitement. Young people may experience dry mouth, paranoia, feeling unmotivated, relaxed or calm. A young person who has used Synthetic Cannabis may appear talkative, relaxed or withdrawn. They may have decreased concentration and slower reaction times.

There are a number of factors that impact how a young person might experience a drug. Such as their location, gender, size, mood and if other drugs, alcohol or if medication has been taken.

UNDERSTANDING:

Understanding more about why a young person might use synthetic cannabis can help guide future conversations with them. Some young people might think that synthetic cannabis is safer than cannabis, there is less likeliness of becoming dependent or even that it is legal.

While a young person may use for many reasons, sometimes drugs can have unintended side effects. Here are some ways to support a young person who might be using synthetic cannabis. It is difficult to know exactly how someone will react to having too much synthetic cannabis however if they are unresponsive, aggressive or disorientated please seek medical support or call 000.

  • Stay calm and approach the young person quietly
  • Support them to move to a safe place where they are comfortable
  • Avoid overly stimulating environments

  • Remind them that the effects will wear off
