Though not actually our clients, working with worried family members can be extremely challenging for Youth AOD workers. It is also incredibly worthwhile. Check out our most popular resources for working with families.

At YoDAA we are often inundated with queries and calls from worried family members, we have also been busy providing resources and info to youth workers who themselves are trying to support families.

It is encouraging that youth workers, in supporting family members to be more effective caregivers of a young person are in fact strengthening environmental factors that influence a young person’s drug use, health and well-being.

The good news is there are some amazing resources to better equip youth workers to do this work. Here are the top 3 resources we have recommended in the past month;

  • The “working with families” toolbox module offers practical advice for workers in diverse roles and at different levels of intervention.  It’s the ultimate in evidenced based AOD work.
  • Family members needn’t sit on their hands and wait for a young person to want to change, The role of the family in overcoming drug problems is an article that speaks directly to families in this situation
  • Helping young people to change – another article for family members that rounds off our top 3 resources for the month.
