Does drinking earlier mean drinking problems in adulthood are more likely?

Alcohol policies around the world seek to delay the initiation of drinking. This is partly because it is thought that the earlier drinking (of any sort) begins the more likely adult alcohol problems will develop. Recent research suggests the evidence about this may be shaky. Other research, highlighted in an earlier YoDAA news item suggested  factors such as the age of first intoxication  may be a better indicator of future harm.
