Drug facts & info

Synthetic New Psychoactive Substances (NPS)

NPS’s are not one type of drug but a general term for drugs designed to mimic or produce similar effects to common illicit drugs.

NPS’s are known as “legal highs” however they are illegal in Victoria.
Usually when a young person has taken a NPS the intended effects should be similar to that of the substance it is meant to mimic. There are reports it takes longer to feel the effects of NPS’s. This can lead to a young person taking another dose and increasing their risk of experiencing adverse effects.
If you think a young person has used too much of a synthetic substance or are seeking medical support, it is important to share what you think they have taken.
There are a number of factors that impact how a young person might experience a drug. Such as their location, gender, size, mood and if other drugs, alcohol or if medication has been taken.

UNDERSTANDING:

Understanding more about why a young person might use NPS’s can help guide future conversations with them. When it comes to NPS’s some young people might think they are safer than illicit drugs, they may believe they are taking one thing, but the effects are not what they expected.
While a young person may use for many reasons, sometimes drugs can have unintended side effects. It is difficult to know exactly how someone will react to having too much of a NPS as the chemicals in these drugs regularly change and there is limited research into their effects. If a young person is unresponsive or disorientated please seek medical support or call 000.

  • Stay calm and approach the young person quietly
  • Offer reassurance that the young person is safe
  • Try to find out what they think they were taking
  • Support them to move to a safe place where they are comfortable
  • Reassure them that you are there to support them
  • Remember the effects will wear off
