Ketamine

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a dissociative drug. In Australia, ketamine is used in hospitals as an anaesthetic, for pain management as well as its use being explored in other therapeutic areas. A term you might hear is “K-Hole”, this term describes the sensation of being separated from reality. This is usually experienced when a high dose is taken.

There are a number of factors that impact how a young person might experience a drug. Such as their location, gender, size, mood and if other drugs, alcohol or if medication has been taken.

UNDERSTANDING:

Understanding why a young person might use Ketamine can help guide future conversations with them. Some young people might enjoy the detached feeling it provides, feelings of euphoria, they might be looking to have a meaningful or spiritual experience or enjoy increased energy and elevated mood.
While young people may use for many reasons, sometimes drugs can have unintended side effects. If someone you care about has used ketamine and appears confused or scared you can

  • Stay calm and approach the young person quietly
  • Support them to move to a safe place where they are comfortable
  • Reassure them that you are there to support them
  • Remember the effects will wear off
If a young person is unconscious or unresponsive contact medical support or 000 asap.
