What is ecstasy or MDMA?
MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is a stimulant known as ecstasy. It comes in pressed pill, powder or crystal forms.
Sometimes ecstasy is mixed with other drugs and sold to young people unknowingly. Pill testing can reduce the harms associated with taking ecstasy and allow young people to make an informed choice about what they are using.
There has been research into the therapeutic use of MDMA for some mental health diagnoses. If this is something your young person is interested in, we suggest speaking with a health professional.
There are a number of factors that impact how a young person might experience a drug, such as their location, gender, size, mood and if other drugs, alcohol or if medication has been taken.
UNDERSTANDING:
Understanding more about why a young person might use MDMA can help guide future conversations with them. Some young people might say they enjoy the feeling MDMA gives them, the way it makes them feel and act in social settings or that it makes them feel confident or more connected to their peer group.
While a young person may use for many reasons, sometimes drugs can have unintended side effects. Here are some ways to support a young person who might have used too much MDMA.
- Stay calm and approach the young person quietly
- Support them to move to a safe and quiet place where they are comfortable
- Reassure them that you are there to support them
- Remind them the effects will wear off
