Drug facts & info

DXM/Cough Syrup

Dextromethorphan (DXM) is the active ingredient found in over-the-counter cough syrups or cold and flu medications such as Robitussin. It has dissociative, sedative and stimulant effects.

There are a number of factors that impact how a young person might experience a drug. Such as their location, gender, size, mood and if other drugs, alcohol or medication has been taken.

APPEARANCE

While pure DXM comes as a white powder it is usually used as medicines containing DXM.

OTHER NAMES

Dex, DXM, Robo, Skittles, Syrup, Triple-C, Vitamin D, Tussin.

HOW COMMON IS USAGE?

DXM use is not commonly reported in Australia but since it is easily obtained from a chemist occasionally use of DXM will occur as a fad by young people or young adults in a region or within a group.

HOW CAN I TELL IF A YOUNG PERSON IS USING?

While using DXM the effects may be described as tripping, dexing, robotripping and more.

DXM causes ‘Woozy’ and detached feelings, a loss of motor control like alcohol, and hallucinations leading to good or bad trips. Large doses can exacerbate mental health problems.

Looking out for packets or bottles of cough medicine or cold and flu medications can also be an indication.

One of the dangers with DXM is it is often not the only ingredient in the medicine. Codeine and panadine are often also mixed in. These medicines in large doses can become toxic and very harmful.

UNDERSTANDING:

Understanding more about why a young person might use DXM can help guide future conversations with them. Some young people might use DXM because it is easy to obtain or they enjoy the hallucinatory or out-of-body experience it gives them.
While a young person may use for many reasons, sometimes drugs can have unintended side effects. Here are some ways to support a young person who might have used too much DXM

  • Stay calm and approach the young person quietly
  • Support them to move to a safe place where they are comfortable
  • Reassure them that you are there to support them
  • Remind them that the effects will wear off
