The impact on young people of not dealing with fines can be significant including increasing fines and negative engagement with the legal system. Youthlaw is starting a new service for young people under 25 to get free legal advice on their unpaid fines.

The service is especially targeting young people who received fines when they were experiencing homelessness, mental health issues, drug and alcohol addiction or if they have an intellectual disability or acquired brain injury are especially being targeted.

The service will commence in July 2014 and will run from 1pm until 5pm on Friday afternoons. It will take place at Front Yard Youth services, 19 King Street in Melbourne.

Don’t forget if you are working with a young person not from Melbourne or who can’t get to the city, you or a young person can still ring Youthlaw for advice between Monday and Friday (business hours). Youthlaw also offer a fantastic skype service for young people in rural areas.
